The Value of Clean URLs

Carlos Interone :: Posted on May 25, 2007 at 11:45 AM

I was talking to a client today, discussing the value of clean URLs. A small nit-pickey detail that can go a long way.

A story:
Today I sent a prospect an email about some of our services. Because of the way Rails creates URLs the link I sent this person was,
“http://www.mostlyclicks.com/pages/email”.

Not a big deal, but the ”/pages/email” looked goofy. Why couldn’t it just be “www.mostlyclicks.com/email”? I did some remapping and now I get really clean URLs. Again, not a big deal but now it is easier to remember, easier to type and easier to pass along in conversation, “Just go to our site forward slash email”. You can also create custom mapping that go to specific pages like this,
“www.mostlyclicks.com/carlos”.
This goes to our “About” page where there is some dribble about me.

Imagine the possibilities with an ecommerce site…
“www.mycoolstore.com/thecoolwidget”
